In Defense of the Hobby and the Right to Tinker

Hobbies are under attack. On all fronts, we face pressure to monetize the things we love.

What if you made a video about that? Those clothes you mend would do so well on Depop. You should sell some of your photographs. People would love if you made knitting content.

This mentality has crept into every fold of our lives. It’s a lens that is hard to shed; our friends talk about how we could make a killing selling whatever knick knacks we make. The internet is full of people trying to wring every dollar out of their lives. And it obviously sounds appealing; you can make some cash doing something you like!

Hawk Mountain Hike

Went on a hike today to Hawk Mountain with college friends Dan and Cate. Really gorgeous hike. Dan just turned 30. Saw an enormous snake, probably as thick as my forearm (I’m going to the gym, but it’s no Popeye arm!).

For being such an offline activity, we talked a lot about the internet, AI, etc… We were reminiscing about the old internet, before 2FA, AI summaries, monetization of everything.

Hello

This is my first post! I’m hoping this blog can be an excercise in putting myself out there, even in a really small way.

I’ve added a few photos to the site. I’d like to add a links page where I can share other places I am online (few) and things that might be relevant if you like my page. I’m mostly interested in building this site as a learning process, as a place to share parts of myself, and as a way to contribute to building the web I want to be on, where individuals make up the web rather than the same four companies.
